Coronado Yacht Club
Brand Identity • Heritage Refresh • Visual Systems • Member Communications
Client: Coronado Yacht Club
Industry: Private Membership Organization / Maritime
Role: Lead Creative Director
Scope: Comprehensive brand refresh, visual identity system, member-facing communications, brand stewardship
Overview
Founded in 1913, Coronado Yacht Club is a historic, member-owned yacht club with deep roots in the Coronado community. While the club’s traditions and culture remained strong, its visual identity had evolved inconsistently over time — resulting in a brand presence that no longer reflected the club’s values, vitality, or future-facing vision.
The objective of this project was to refresh the Coronado Yacht Club brand with care and intention — honoring its history while creating a cohesive visual system designed to serve the club and its members for decades to come.
Context & Considerations
Rebranding a private, legacy organization requires a different approach than commercial branding. The work needed to respect tradition, align with governance structures, and earn trust across a diverse membership — many of whom felt a strong sense of personal ownership in the club’s identity.
Key considerations included:
- Preserving the integrity of a century-old institution
- Navigating member sentiment and board oversight
- Creating clarity and consistency without erasing history
- Designing a system flexible enough to support events, communications, and merchandise
- The goal was evolution, not reinvention.
Approach
As lead creative director, I guided the club through a thoughtful, collaborative rebrand process focused on stewardship rather than trend.
The work began with a close study of the club’s history, symbols, and culture, followed by the development of a refined visual identity system rooted in maritime tradition and modern restraint. Every design decision prioritized longevity, legibility, and ease of use across member-facing applications.
The rebrand was developed in close collaboration with club leadership and committees, balancing creative clarity with thoughtful consensus-building.
Scope of Work
The brand refresh extended across multiple touchpoints, including:
- Refined club burgee and core identity elements
- Typography, color palette, and visual guidelines
- Event and regatta materials
- Member communications and printed collateral
- Apparel, merchandise, and signage applications
- Brand stewardship guidance for future use
The result was a unified system that improved consistency while allowing flexibility for the club’s wide range of activities and traditions.
Outcome
The refreshed Coronado Yacht Club brand strengthened recognition, improved consistency, and provided a clear visual foundation for the club’s future.
Members responded positively to a brand that felt both familiar and elevated — one that respected the club’s heritage while positioning it confidently for the next generation. The new system continues to support communications, events, and merchandise with clarity and cohesion.
